Sports and Education Volunteering in Swaziland

Your role as an Education Through Sports volunteer

Our education through sports project offers you the opportunity to use rugby as a medium to spread the message ‘Pass the Ball, Not the Virus’ to thousands of children throughout Swaziland.

You will travel, on a daily basis, to a number of different school’s throughout Swaziland to provide school children with rugby skills.  Whilst you are running these sports days, you will be using rugby as a medium to spread the message ‘pass the ball, not the virus’, in a bid to educate the children about the dangers of HIV/AIDS.

You will also assist with the training of local teacher-coaches to ensure the children are able to continue to play rugby, painting our partner’s logo on the school premises, and handing out donated rugby kits whilst organising inter-school tournaments.

Cost £950 for four weeks.  Should you wish to volunteer for longer, we are able to offer reductions in your fee according to time frame.  Please contact us for more information.

Also, as we work in an ethical manner, should you be able to convince a friend to volunteer with you, we are able to reduce your fee by up to 15% (due to a reduction in administration costs, and rise in project donation).  Please contact us for more information.

What Will I Achieve by Volunteering and Supporting This Work?

With only 17 000 of the reported 200 000 cases of HIV/AIDS being reported amongst children, by spreading the message ‘Pass the Ball, Not the Virus’ to school children when they are at an impressionable age, you can help reduce the spread of the disease amongst Swaziland’s next generation.

You will also help train local teacher-coaches to ensure the sport and message flourishes throughout Swazi schools, and provide newly established teams with new kits to help them participate in inter-school tournaments.

Throughout the duration of this project, you will be being trained for your Level 1 Rugby Coaching Award, accredited by the IRB, and you will be presented with your certificate upon completion of the project.

You can walk away from this project knowing that you have had a real impact not only in introducing Rugby to Swaziland, but in furthering an important effort to reduce the HIV/AIDS infection rate in Swaziland.  You will also forge a strong, lifelong relationship with the coaches, schools and children that you work alongside, with your presence never being forgotten!

A Bit More Detail

Our partner organisation is the only gap scheme in Swaziland that combine rugby and HIV/AIDS education.  They are supported by the IRB, SOS Kit Aid, and work in conjunction with Swings and Roundabouts to identify school sites that would benefit from a borehole and play-pump system.
